Terms and conditions

Before you decide to take part in Ingenuity 2020, please read our Terms and Conditions carefully.

Application stage

Eligibility criteria

  • All Future Business Founder applicants must be students, alumni, researchers, staff or those associated with an Ingenuity 2020 partner University. They may also be individuals from outside the university community who are interested in setting up an impact-led business in the region.
  • All Regional Pioneer applicants must be employed by their organisation at the time of applying, and will need permission from their employer to take part. They do not need to belong to an Ingenuity 2020 partner organisation.
  • Applicants can enter as an individual, or a team of no more than four. However, a smaller number may be invited to the workshops to allow for broader participation.
  • Teams will have a lead applicant who will be the main source of contact throughout the process.
  • Throughout the Ingenuity 2020 Programme (20 November 2020 – 31 March 2021) applicants must be legally residing within the UK.
  • Future Business Founder applicants must be able to legally form a company in the UK no later than March 2021 (this cannot be done on a study Visa).
  • All applicants must be at least 18 years of age.
  • If you already have an idea, the product must be at pre-trading stage, or have started trading no more than six months at time of applying.
  • Your business or idea must not have received investment, assigned equity and any grants or awards in the past two years must be declared at time of applying or throughout the Ingenuity Programme.

Application criteria

  • All applicants can only submit one application.
  • You can apply for one primary Challenge pathway. When multiple applications occur, all applications will be disqualified without notification.
  • You may also apply to attend the open workshop for one other related Challenge.
  • Incomplete applications will not be considered.
  • All applications must be submitted by midnight (GMT) on Thursday 12 November 2020.
  • Late entries will not be considered.
Challenge Summit Stage

Attendance criteria

  • Only participants who have been invited to attend their chosen Challenge Summits and workshop sessions will be able to attend.
  • Invitations will be dependent on your usage of the Develop Platform as well as the assessment of your idea.
  • You will have to confirm your attendance via an online link by 5pm (GMT) on Monday 23 November 2020.
  • Failure to attend the FULL event will result in you being disqualified from Ingenuity.
  • It is at the discretion of the participating universities in your region to decide which participants will be invited to the Challenge Summits following assessment.
  • Decisions made will be final and no appeals will be accepted.
  • Participants not invited to a Challenge Summit will still have access to the Develop Platform until Monday 23 November 2020.
Business plan submission stage

Eligibility criteria

  • Only participants who attended their Challenge Workshop fully will be invited to submit their business plan.
  • Ideas and business plans must be owned by the participant submitting it.
  • Ideas and business plans must be related to one of the four Ingenuity 2020 Challenges.
  • Individuals/teams must intend to implement their idea within six months of completion of the programme to be considered.
  • Individuals/teams must have the legal right to form a business in the UK.
  • The lead applicant must intend to run the business themselves, with most of your team to proceed to the workshops.

Submission criteria

  • Participants/teams can only submit one idea.
  • Teams can consist of up to four participants. Teams can consist of Future Founders and Regional Pioneers as well as any participants such as regional stakeholders you have met during the workshop.
  • Incomplete submissions will not be considered.
  • Additional information will not be accepted under any circumstances.
  • All submissions must be submitted by midnight (GMT) on Friday 19 February 2021.
  • Late entries will not be considered.

Judging criteria

There will be two judging streams – one for Future Business Founders and one for Regional Pioneers.

  • Your idea will be anonymised and assessed independently by Ingenuity’s Challenge and Development Partners.
  • Each submission will be weighted equally and scored from the Ingenuity judging criteria.
  • You will be sent the scores and feedback for your idea once the assessment process is complete.
  • Decisions are final and no appeals will be accepted.
Regional pitch day stage

Eligibility criteria

  • Only participants who were shortlisted during the business plan assessment stage will be invited to attend the Regional Pitch Day.
  • Ideas and business plans must be owned by the participant submitting it.
  • Ideas and business plans must be related to one of the four Ingenuity 2020 Challenges.
  • Failure to attend the Regional Pitch Day will result in you being disqualified from the competition. This will include all unforeseen circumstances or illness as this is a crucial stage of the programme and panels cannot be reconvened.

Judging criteria

There will be two judging streams – one for Future Business Founders and one for Regional Pioneers.

  • Your pitch will be assessed by a panel of experts from your region, as well as Ingenuity’s national partners.
  • Each pitch will be weighted equally and scored from the Ingenuity judging criteria.
  • You will be sent the scores and feedback for your pitch following the Regional Pitch Day.
  • Decisions will be final and no appeals will be accepted.
Ingenuity Week

Eligibility criteria

  • Only participants who were invited to Ingenuity Week following the Regional Pitch Days will be able to attend.
  • Two members of each selected team will be able to attend Ingenuity Week.
  • Teams must be present for the full programme of activities during Ingenuity Week.
  • Failure to do so will result in disqualification from Ingenuity.

 

Ingenuity grants & investments
  • All monies will be paid into a UK bank account held in the name of either the business or the winning applicant(s).
  • Loans will only be paid into a UK business account.
  • All monies will be against set criteria and goals. Reporting will be expected against this.
  • Recipients of grants or loans must reference the financial support on their website, and relevant communications, for a period of at least two years or the length of the loan, whichever is greater. Or in such a situation where Ingenuity no longer wants association with an entity Ingenuity shall be removed.
General terms
  • Ingenuity reserves the right to withdraw any entry at any stage of the 2020 programme that is found to be in breach of any of the pre-established conditions and/or rules laid out on this page.
  • Ingenuity reserves the right to move any events or activity online, or cancel them entirely, as determined by government guidance on public health.
  • In the event of ideas being passed off or used dishonestly related participants will be disqualified from the 2020 and all subsequent programmes of Ingenuity.
  • The judges’ decision is final at each assessment stage and no correspondence will be entered into. Each stage of assessment will consist of a minimum of one independent judge. Feedback will be provided automatically at each submission stage.
  • Any use of – or reference to – Ingenuity needs to be approved by the Ingenuity Director in writing. Ingenuity reserves the right to change or amend the individuals on the judging panels and external partners/companies participating in any stage of the programme.
  • Ingenuity accepts no responsibility for any intellectual property rights infringements (including issues related to third party copyright, design rights, patents, trademarks or trade names) and the revelation of business ideas, processes or products attained during the programme. All judges and Ingenuity staff involved in the programme will be asked to sign a non-disclosure agreement to make sure Ingenuity does its best to protect the businesses involved.
  • No responsibility can be accepted for submissions not received before the deadline nor for entries that are lost, mislaid, incomplete or illegible.
  • Ingenuity reserves the right to update or amend these terms and conditions without prior notice at any time, and we will notify participants within 28 days of any amendments.
  • Ingenuity reserve the right to amend the assessment or judging structure for any of the stages throughout the programme at any time and this will be published no later than seven days before they take effect.
  • Applicants will be responsible for any costs incurred in the process of the programme unless otherwise agreed with Ingenuity or its partners. Ingenuity will cover travel, subsistence and accommodation costs for the Future Founders attending Ingenuity Week only as defined.
  • Any personal data relating to any participants will be used solely in accordance with the University of Nottingham’s GDPR policy and will not be shared without the applicant’s prior consent. You will be asked to opt-in to have your relevant personal data shared with your university, your regional University Host and Ingenuity Partners when needed during the programme.
  • By entering the Ingenuity Programme, applicants are indicating their agreement to be bound by these terms and conditions.
